His commitment to Jewish scholarship led him to Israel, where he pursued advanced Talmudic studies at an Orthodox yeshiva. During his time in Israel, Teller questioned certain fundamentalist aspects of the yeshiva system. Seeking new avenues for intellectual and creative expression, he returned to Chicago and shifted his focus to storytelling and media. He enrolled at Columbia College Chicago, where he earned a degree in television writing, refining his skills in crafting engaging narratives. He immersed himself in contemporary Chasidic music and the teachings of innovative Jewish thinkers, broadening his understanding of Jewish spirituality beyond the traditional framework of his youth. His journey led him to audit classes at a Conservative rabbinical school in Jerusalem and participate in an intensive experiential Jewish education program. These experiences solidified his calling—to pursue a career in Jewish leadership that emphasized creativity, inclusivity, and a deep connection to tradition.

Academic Pursuits and Rabbinic Ordination

Determined to channel his passion into a meaningful vocation, Ranon returned to the United States in 1998 and enrolled at the University of Judaism, now the American Jewish University, in Los Angeles. He pursued a degree in Jewish education and rabbinic ordination there, earning recognition for his outstanding academic achievements. In 2000, he received his master's degree from the Fingerhut School of Education, where he was honored with the award for Outstanding Achievement. His dedication to Jewish scholarship continued, and in 2002, he was ordained as a rabbi, receiving prestigious accolades, including the Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence and the Ziegler School Award for Excellence in Talmudic Studies. In recognition of his contributions to Jewish education and leadership, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in May 2022.
